David recently recognised 20 Western Victorians for their outstanding sporting performances, achievements and contributions to sport at the Wannon Australian Sports Awards ceremony in Hamilton. Wannon’s Sport Achievement Award recipients were commended for their:  Individual or team achievement, such as national or state team selection, regional/state/national competition success, or high-level single performance;  Community sport contribution by individuals, including coaches, referees/umpires and administrators with a minimum of five years service; and  Contribution to sport by schools, community groups (eg Lions, Rotary) or media organisations to a particular sporting event, facility or for continuous support over a minimum of two years. Local winners were: Mr Brenton Andreoli of Naringal, for Exceptional Performances in Aerobics Mrs Merelyn Bunworth of Heywood for her Outstanding Contribution as a Committed Volunteer to sporting clubs Mr Bruce & Mrs Elizabeth Clarke fo Noorat for their Outstanding Contribution to Harness Racing Mrs Cheryl Ford of Portland for her Voluntary Service and Lifetime Contribution to the Portland Netball Association Mrs Shirley Forrest of Hamilton for her Outstanding Contribution as a Committed Volunteer to various sports Mr James Gardiner of Carranballac for his Outstanding Achievements in Car Racing - Winner of Victorian Title 2008 season Mrs Ann Hayes of Hamilton for her Outstanding Contribution as a Committed Volunteer to various sports Mrs Elizabeth Lawrence of Tarrington for Carriage driving - Victorian Novice Horse State Champion 2009 & Australian Novice Horse National Champion 2009 Mr Tim Martin of Grassmere for Water skiing - Australian under 21 men's slalom champion Mr Benson Milgate of Warrnambool for Body Building - Exceptional Performances Miss Jessica Moulden of Cobden for Outstanding Achievements in Formula 500 Car Racing Ms Sue Muldoon of Portland for a Lifetime Contribution to Netball as player, umpire, coach and administrator. Mr Brenton Rowe of Dunkeld for Outstanding success in Running - Runner Up in the metric mile at Stawell Gift 2009 Miss Kellie Sommerville of Dunkeld for Exceptional Achievements in Netball Miss Emma Sommerville of Dunkeld for Outstanding Success in Netball Ms Laura Speed of Hamilton for Outstanding Achievements in Cricket at the Regional, State and National Level Mr Percy Walsh of Stawell for his Outstanding Contribution to Martial Arts Sprocket Rockets Murray-Moyne Cycling Team of Hamilton region for their Outstanding support of the Mulleraterong Adult Training & Support Service through participation in the Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay The warrnambool Standard for Exceptional support for jumps racing and the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival Senator Cory Bernardi, a former Australian rower, was guest speaker at the ceremony and he congratulated all of the award winners for their dediction and enthusiasm for their chosen sports.
